Inspired by a black gay experience, this autobiographical piece focuses on the ups and downs of pride and self-loathing. Through storytelling, spoken word and live art, Jamal develops the courage to tell his story of how he learned to celebrate his individuality, by embracing the slurs that were thrown his way, and how to wear labels without shame.

Jamal Gerald is an artist based in Leeds. His work is conversational, socially conscious, a celebration of individuality and focuses on identity and lived experiences. Mostly making the type of work that he wants to see. Trying to make sure that each piece he creates is a different form to the one he made before. He has made work for poetry slams, films, parties, cafes and theatres.
